Graduation Scam (7-3-18)

There have been reports of a new scam targeting students who have graduated or are near graduation. The scam is conducted over phone, the scammer will state that the victim will need to give back their degree because they are missing class credits and/or owe money to the school. The scammer claims they have agents on the way to take the degree. The scammer will give information such as student housing records, class/grade info, and graduation info in an attempt to appear more legitimate. Please be advised that the call is a scam.

If VCU needs to reach out to you for unpaid debt they will do so with email. You can also check your e-services account to check for unpaid balance. If VCU needs to revoke your degree they will ask you to return it by mail or destroy it. If you are unsure about your status or have questions about your degree, you should contact the Office of Records and Registration directly at rar@vcu.edu. If you received a phone call such as this, hang up and do not contact them back.

Internship Availability Jobs, Employment, Scam (6-24-18)

The following is a job offer scam. The scammer is posing as an employer with an opportunity for the victim. This is a scam, do not respond to the scammer and delete the email if you have received it.

Some signs that this is a scam are the fact that the scammer are the non- business email used and the attached file with little to no writing in the body of the email. In this particular scam, the scammer has appeared to have attached the wrong file. The file attached (Shown below) is an application for a house.

Ignore and delete the email if you have received it.

Be smarter next time ID 37LsDxt, Scam (7-2-18)

The following is a variation of a previous scam. The structure remains the same, however, the scammer claims they have material (footage) of the victim in some embarrassing manner. Unless the victim sends over a sum of money to the scammer, the video of the victim will be sent to their relatives and other contacts. In the hopes that the victim is too embarrassed, the scammer hopes that the victim will send over the money.

This is a scam, the scammer does not have a video of the victim and even if they did, they would not delete it because the victim sent over some money. The scammer will continue to harass the victim for money until the victim gives up. The best course of action if you receive an email like this is to delete it and ignore the email.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT, Scam (07-2-18)

The following is a job offer scam. This is very similar to previous job offer scams that we have seen before. This time instead of an assistant to a doctor, the job scam is to advertise for a company on your car.

You can tell this is a scam because it came from a different email address than the business (the email used is completely unrelated- In fact the email is from someone internal.)

If you have received this email please delete it.
