Payment scam (8/24/18)

The following scam attempts to trick the victim into contacting the scammer in order to make a payment. These targeted scams are usually sent to a few people in the environment in hopes of stealing money from the organization. In this case, the scammer spoofed the email address of the senior administrator in VCU and pretended to issue a payment request. The sense of urgency is a tell tale sign of the scam. If you receive these types of messages, it is best to confirm with the requester via phone or an alternative communication mechanism before processing any payments.
